Joy-In:

​what's the context?

From 2020, the world has been plunged into a global pandemic beyond what anyone has seen except.
Joy-In has been created from March to May 2020, at the beginning of the global pandemic. The team aims to create an all-in-one platform that safely connects and entertains people during this global pandemic, and any other time too.

Joy-In app for the beginning of 2020
Joy-In’s core functions are to join the event and host the event. The drive-in concept is safe as people are confined to their cars. Payment and ordering concessions are seamless and safe with our app. Joy-In is all-in-one for event hosts who are looking to reach new audiences and need support with sales and marketing. It uses technology to create group and screen interaction, generating a much-needed sense of community and shared experience.

Okay... what's the problem?

Research

At the beginning of this project, we did 3 weeks of ethnographic research work, including the online survey, in-person interviews, as well as competitive analysis, to get a holistic understanding of people's physical and psychological influences due to COVID-19.

Pain points

Taking all our findings into account, we narrowed in on a few intriguing insights.

#1: Tired of being stuck home alone and missing social activities.
People miss spending time with friends and family and are experiencing a great deal of boredom while stuck at home.

#2 Lacking a real-time sharing and co-creating happiness platform.

Despite being stuck at home, people are finding joy in the little things. However, they need access to spread their happiness while social distancing.

#3 Worried about getting infected during social activities?
The fear of getting infected or spreading the virus is a driver for why many stay at home.

My Contribution

As a project manager, I made the project plan for the ten-week project process. Combining with the Double Diamond model, separated the process into two phases, research and design sessions.
I led all group research work sessions, and organized online workshops for the research analysis with team members and our interviewees. I participated in low-fi & mid-fi prototyping and user testing with team members. I did the branding design and all high-fi prototyping for the whole team.
After the group project finished, I re-organized the research result on my own, service-mapped research results to transfer research insights to ideation works.

To better understand the connection between our target users' pain points and our design works, I further synthesized the interview results and came up with the following personas.

Redefine our research findings

Based on our previous research works, we reorganized pain points for 3 groups of target users. 
And then we clustered their need and generated 6 key features to solve those problems. At the same 
time we listed potential stakeholders based on our key features.

Narrow down our 1001 ideas

Information Archeciture

I created an information architecture to clarify our concepts for the whole team and added more information and details to refine Joy-In's features.

Prototypes

We quickly drew out sketches of these functionalities with the team to make sure that everyone's on the same page. We used Figma to create our low-fi and mid-fi prototypes.

User Testing

With the goals we had for this iteration in mind, we moderated two rounds of user testing sessions with 10 users over Zoom and in-person. Users rated the app in the Google Forms questionnaire after the test.

Users completed a series of tasks to the best of their ability, along with rating the app on its usefulness, user satisfaction, ease of use, ease of learning, and aesthetics.

After two rounds of user testing, we found that participants feel confused about how to start the social interaction. Therefore, we decided to use a toast message to guide people to join the socializing when the app detects the user arriving at the event.

Final Design
After the whole team went through low-fi, mid-fi prototyping, and two rounds of user testing, it's time to introduce our concept. I made the branding design and high-fi prototypes to transfer our concepts to the final deliverables for the whole team.

Sort via location and date, users have access to a wide variety of drive-in events from the expected (movies, church services and concerts) to the unexpected (carpool karaoke, trivia and gaming) 

2. Car Reservation

Without a car to join the event?
We provide a Car Reservation service. 
Non-car owners can still attend events via Joy-In’s partnerships with Share Now (US). Search for nearby available cars, reserve and unlock using our app.

3. Socialize with others

Play, sing, talk and interact with others to join the event.
Share the experience and
interact with others. Upon arrival at the event, Joy-In will prompt users to “join” in on the fun. Special interactive features will be unlocked, customized to each event.

4. Delivery Contactless Food Service

Want to have some snacks during the event?
Seamless ordering and contactless delivery from local restaurants. Event hosts can partner with local restaurants and bars to provide in-app concessions ordering and contactless delivery right to attendees’ cars.

Have an idea for an event but no clue how to bring it to life?
Post, host and manage an event from ticketing and sales to event logistics. Connect with local vendors for food and beverages at the event. Reach new audiences through Joy-In’s in-app marketing and promotion.

If I have more time...

Future Development

Develop the Joy-In live session

Explore multiple ways for people to interact with others under a safe social distance during the event. Think about how to use car functions and the environment to create additional entertainment to enhance the whole experience.

Develop the self-create function

Joy-in has the feature to give event holder a way to create their event by themselves. 

Think about how to guide and engage people to create events, and how to combine local resources to create events.

My Reflections

Being flexible, work for the project not for the design methods 

As a project manager, learning how to according to the project process to adjust the process plan and choice suitable methodologies. Here are hundreds of design methods and there are no sticky rules to obey the design process to finish works. This project taught me to understand the project before setting up a project plan.

Building the bridge between research and ideation works 

As a researcher and a team player, I realized we always do lots of research work and then jump to the ideation phase to start brainstorming freely. Therefore the work journey begins with the target user's pain points and finally complete without them. This project taught me that it is important to take the environment into account when digging into the user's needs and connect with the concept feature.
